What is this new rustic style in today’s home all about?
Today’s interiors are gravitating more and more to a rustic look. Why is this? The aged wooden walls and warmth of the colors and decor in rustic designs is what can make your home feel “homey.” Although some say that this is “trendy”, others believe it is reaching back to our heritage. This new style can make a space look natural, comfortable, and perfectly aged.
Rustic decor usually includes antiqued, weathered woods of various colors and shades and gives a space an old and natural feeling.
I find that these new rustic interiors focus on nature and a return to traditions. In many ways they remind me of the old colonial days. I grew up in Olde Towne Alexandria, VA, where the cobblestone streets, cast iron kettles and ship-lap walls were a common site for site-seers. Wood chopping blocks and rough brick walls with wooden beamed ceilings were such a part of the architecture and typical lifestyle. There is something so natural and comforting about the old way of life, that I believe people love to remember and brings a cozy, warm feeling to them. Along with being very earthy, it is very endearing.

I think this theme exudes an “earthy” vibe where wooden accents are present as well as metal, rust, rope, wicker, plants, antlers, feathers, plants, old glass and lots of texture, to name a few. These rustic interiors have an organic feel that can mix-and-match as the designer pleases and it will not look chaotic! I think it is fascinating how so many textures and neutral colors can be incorporated into one place and still look cohesive.
